I was attempting to encode a DVD so the missus could watch it on the MacBook while we’re in the car today, without bothering with the DVD itself. I had about 2 hours to do it, before we left. The first pass took about an hour. It wasn’t until the second pass that Handbrake told me it needed another 2 3/4 hours for the second pass. pwn3d.
Cue Marco reminding me his Mac Pro and its 500 cores can do it in about 4 clock cycles…. :-P
typically I can stick a hour and a half of video through in about 20 minutes, I usually pick the ps3 encoding option, which is more than sufficient for viewing on a 50” plasma screen. (although I too am running it on a mac pro). but only on a single pass encoding.
