Apple’s $700 mistake
![]()
Last week I purchased a new MacBook Pro
I opted for the 2.4ghz Core 2 Duo. It comes by default with 2 gigs of RAM and a 160 gig drive.
It’s a sweet machine.
I wanted to upgrade to 4 gigs of RAM since that is the max for this computer. Apple charges $700 for the extra memory. Crucial charges $140. I went with Crucial.
I think Apple is making a big mistake here.
It’s silly that Apple charges so much more for a commodity part like RAM.
But more importantly, Macs run so much better with tons of RAM. By charging $700 I suspect most people just leave their Macs as is with 2 gigs which really is suboptimal at best.
I bet if Apple charged even $200 they would see a lot more folks upgrade and love their Macs even more.
couldn’t agree with this more. Apple’s overcharging for key upgrades has been gutting their customer acquisition efforts for years. Mac users at this point are willing to pay a premium for such a superior machine (mac v. pc). But they aren’t stupid.
Agreed, apple upgrades are ludicrously overpriced. for example I recently ordered a mac pro 8 core, to increase the memory to 6GB and hdd to 2.5TB here’s the costs. (the mac pro comes with 320GB hdd and 2GB ram minimum)
Ram
Apple : 4GB (2x2GB ) = $999.00
Macsales : 4GB(2x2GB) = $218.00
HDD
Apple : 3 x 750GB drives = $1197 (3 x $399)
MacSales : 3 x 750GB drives = $498 (3 x $166)
Saving me $1381
